Meet the Directors

Mr. Bruce Habitzruther has a Bachelor of Music Education degree from the State University of New York at Fredonia.  While there he was selected concerto competition winner in his junior year.  He did further studies at the Royal Conservatory and Royal Academy of the Fine Arts in Antwerp , Belgium.  At the Conservatory he majored in cello performance and conducting. Mr. Habitzruther received a Master of Music Degree in performance (cello) from Wichita State University where he received a full Ford Foundation Grant.  While in Wichita he played with the Wichita Symphony Orchestra and was a member of the Graduate String Quartet.

Mr. Habitzruther has recently retired from the Lynchburg City Schools where he was string specialist and Director of Strings.  He currently teaches at Lynchburg College and has previously taught at Randolph-Macon Woman's College, Sweet Briar College and the Virginia School of the Arts.  Mr. Habitzruther received the 2005 Mayor's Award of Excellence and is the first musician in the city to be awarded this honor.  He is founder, music director and conductor of the Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra.

Mrs. Ellen Habitzruther received her Bachelor of Music Degree in Performance from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester , New York .  She studied for several summers at Tanglewood, home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.  She was awarded a Ford Foundation grant to study at Wichita State University where she received her Master of Music Degree.  While in Wichita she performed with the Wichita Symphony Orchestra and the Wichita State Graduate String Quartet.  Mrs. Habitzruther was selected as concerto competition winner and soloed with the Wichita State University Orchestra.  Mrs. Habitzruther recently retired from the Lynchburg City Schools as a string specialist.  She has taught at Randolph-Macon Woman's College and the Virginia School of the Arts.  In 1994, Mrs. Habitzruther was honored by the YWCA Academy of Women for Achievement in the Arts.  She currently teaches at Lynchburg College and is concertmaster of the Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra.
